There is jubilation in Rukungiri district among opposition politicians after Forum for Democratic Change’s Betty Bamukwatsa Muzanira trounced National Resistance Movement’s Masiko Winfred Kyomuhangi in the heated Woman Member of Parliament By-election held on Thursday.
According to results released by the electoral commission early this morning, Muzanira scooped 50611 votes, Masiko polled 46379 votes, whereas the other contenders Saazi Prisca Mbuga got 993 and Fabith Kukundakwe got 183.
The results were released by the Rukungiri district Electoral Commission Returning officer, who said that
“Accordingly, as the Returning Officer in Rukungiri district and in accordance with Section 58 (1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act,2005 (As Amended), I declare Bamukwatsa Betty who has obtained the largest number of votes to be the elected candidate for district woman representative to parliament, Rukungiri district.”
The by-election had earlier on been heated up by FDC stalwarts Dr. Kizza Besigye, Mugisha Muntu, Patrick Amuriat Oboi, plus several opposition leaders amongst them MP Bobi Wine, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Ingrid Turinawe, among others.
